The British National (Overseas) Visa (BN(O)) is a special UK immigration route for people from Hong Kong who hold BN(O) status, as well as their eligible family members. This visa was launched in January 2021 to support Hong Kong residents with a stable pathway to the UK.
The BN(O) visa allows holders to live, work, and study in the UK without needing sponsorship from an employer or institution. It can be granted for 2.5 years or 5 years, and applicants can later extend it. After 5 years of continuous residence, BN(O) visa holders may apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) and, after 12 months of ILR, for British citizenship.
This route also provides access to NHS healthcare, education, and employment opportunities.
BN(O) status was created for Hong Kong residents before the 1997 handover. People with this status can apply for the BN(O) visa.
No, BN(O) visa holders cannot claim public funds, but they can work and study freely.

The application fee is currently £180 for 2.5 years or £250 for 5 years, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
Yes, after 5 years on the BN(O) visa you can apply for ILR, and after holding ILR for 12 months, you may apply for citizenship
